The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is a key milestone for high school students working toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). If you’re a parent of a student in Grade 10 — or if your child hasn’t yet completed the requirement — it’s important to understand what the OSSLT involves and what to expect in the upcoming 2024–2025 school year.
What is the OSSLT and why is it important?
The OSSLT is a standardized literacy assessment that measures your child’s reading and writing skills — two areas that are essential for success after high school. It’s administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) and is usually taken by students in Grade 10.
Successfully completing the OSSLT (or an alternative literacy course if needed) is a graduation requirement for all Ontario students.
What skills are tested on the OSSLT?
The test looks at two major skills:
- Reading: Understanding information, narratives, and graphic texts
- Writing: Communicating ideas clearly and organizing them effectively
Students complete a variety of tasks, including multiple-choice questions, short written responses, and longer pieces like opinion essays or news articles. The OSSLT is written online, and built-in supports like text-to-speech and adjustable fonts are available to make the experience accessible for all learners.
What can parents do to support their child?
You don’t need to turn your home into a classroom to help your child succeed on the OSSLT. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference:
- Encourage regular reading (books, news articles, or essays)
- Talk about current events or stories to build comprehension skills
- Support different types of writing at home — even short opinion pieces or summaries
Most importantly, keep the pressure low. Confidence can be just as important as skill when it comes to test day.
What happens if a student doesn’t pass?
If a student doesn’t pass the OSSLT on the first try, there’s no need to panic. Students can:
- Retake the OSSLT in a future year
- Enrol in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC), which meets the graduation requirement
Both options are designed to ensure that every student has a clear path to success.
Understanding the OSSLT is an important part of planning your child’s high school journey. By staying informed and choosing a supportive educational environment, you can help them confidently meet the requirements for their OSSD and prepare for a bright future.
