This summer, Metro Prep’s GENIUS Biotechnology Program has once again turned curious young minds into junior forensic scientists through the popular DNA Detectives: Forensic Mysteries & DNA Crime Lab camp.
Now more than halfway through the summer, campers ages 10-14 have spent their weeks investigating mock crime scenes, extracting their own DNA, running forensic laboratory experiments, and discovering how modern biotechnology is used to solve real-world mysteries. The response has been enthusiastic, with campers returning home each week excited to share what they’ve learned.
Unlike a traditional science camp, DNA Detectives gives students the chance to work in Metro Prep’s GENIUS biotechnology laboratory, using many of the same techniques and equipment found in university and professional research settings. Throughout the week, campers isolate their own DNA, investigate mock crime scene evidence, perform gel electrophoresis, explore forensic DNA analysis, and work together to solve challenging scientific mysteries.
Beyond the lab, the camp is filled with laughter, teamwork, creativity, and discovery. Whether celebrating a successful experiment, collaborating to crack the final CSI Challenge, or proudly wearing their lab coats while working alongside new friends, students quickly discover that science can be both challenging and a lot of fun.
The camp also offers families a glimpse into Metro Prep’s GENIUS Program, where high school students build on these same hands-on foundations through coursework in genetics, molecular biology, DNA sequencing, biotechnology, and scientific research.
The excitement doesn’t end with summer. Metro Prep also offers a series of GENIUS Saturday Workshops throughout the school year for students ages 12-16, featuring hands-on experiences in topics such as DNA analysis, CRISPR gene editing, disease diagnostics, genetic engineering, and alternative fuels.
With two exciting weeks still to come in August, the DNA Detectives adventure is far from over. We look forward to welcoming another group of young scientists as they put on their lab coats, step into the laboratory, and discover that science isn’t simply something to read about, it’s something to experience.
