Genetic Engineering Workshop

Bioscience | Engineering | Science
Overview

Dive into the exciting world of genetic engineering in this hands-on workshop designed for high school students. This program introduces the core principles and techniques used to manipulate DNA, giving participants practical experience with cutting-edge tools and methods. From learning how to isolate and analyze plasmids to transforming bacteria with engineered DNA, students will gain an in-depth understanding of how scientists modify genetic material to solve real-world problems. Ideal for those curious about biotechnology, genetics, or molecular biology, this workshop equips students with essential lab skills and insights into the innovations shaping modern science.

By the End of the Workshop, Students Will Be Able To:

Step Into the World of Genetic Engineering

Master DNA Fingerprinting

Restriction Cloning
Take on the role of a molecular biologist and learn how to cut and paste DNA using restriction enzymes. Explore how these "molecular scissors" and ligases are used to assemble custom DNA sequences, forming the basis of modern genetic engineering.
Minipreparations
Discover how to isolate plasmid DNA from bacteria through rapid and efficient minipreps.
Bacterial Transformation
Step into the lab to introduce your engineered DNA into bacteria. Watch as the bacteria take up plasmids and express new traits, such as antibiotic resistance or fluorescent proteins, providing a visual demonstration of successful genetic modification.
Plasmid Mapping and Analysis
Understand the structure and function of plasmids by analyzing restriction maps. Learn how to verify your cloning success and troubleshoot genetic constructs like a true scientist.
Applications of Genetic Engineering
Dive deeper into the real-world applications of these techniques. From creating life-saving medicines to engineering crops with improved traits, discover how these tools are shaping the future of science and technology.

Take your understanding of biology to the next level with these hands-on activities, unlocking the potential of DNA to solve global challenges!

Camp Details

All campers should be dressed appropriately for an active Camp Program. Each camp day for all programs will include outdoor play. We recommend running shoes and comfortable clothing that can get dirty.

While each camp has a focus, camp-style games and programming will also be incorporated every day, including daily outdoor activities. Please send sunscreen, a hat and water bottle labelled with your camper’s name to camp each day.

Campers in all camp programs will have the opportunity to participate in recreational swimming 2–3 times per week. Campers should come prepared with a bathing suit and towel on their swim days (a schedule will be sent to registered families). Please note there is no alternative programming available during swim time.

Lunch and a healthy snack are included each day. Please refer to our Camp menu for details.
