Overview

This immersive DNA Forensics Workshop offers high school students a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of DNA analysis in criminal investigations. Through engaging lessons, real-world case studies, and hands-on lab activities, students will learn the techniques used in professional forensic laboratories. Participants will gain practical experience in DNA collection, extraction, amplification, and profiling while working with industry-standard tools like polymerase chain reaction (PCR), agarose gel electrophoresis, and Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis. This workshop is designed to provide valuable skills and insights for students interested in careers in biotechnology, forensic science, molecular biology, or law enforcement.

By the End of the Workshop, Students Will Be Able To:

Unlock the Mysteries of DNA Forensics

Master DNA Fingerprinting Techniques By Gaining Hands-on Experience in

DNA Collection and Handling
Step into the role of a forensic scientist and learn how to properly collect biological samples, such as saliva, hair, or skin cells. Master aseptic techniques to ensure your samples remain uncontaminated and ready for analysis.
DNA Extraction Techniques
Dive into the science of isolating DNA from biological samples. Understand the chemical processes used to break open cells and extract the genetic material, preparing it for advanced testing and analysis.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Uncover how scientists amplify tiny amounts of DNA into billions of copies. This powerful technique, which mimics natural DNA replication, is essential for profiling and analyzing even the smallest traces of evidence.
Agarose Gel Electrophoresis
Learn how to separate DNA fragments by size using electric fields and specialized gels. Watch as your DNA samples transform into visible bands, confirming successful amplification and readying them for further investigation.
Short Tandem Repeat (STR) Profiling
Delve into the cutting-edge science of creating unique DNA profiles. Explore how forensic scientists use STR markers to identify individuals, solve crimes, and make breakthroughs in criminal investigations.

Camp Details

All campers should be dressed appropriately for an active Camp Program. Each camp day for all programs will include outdoor play. We recommend running shoes and comfortable clothing that can get dirty.

While each camp has a focus, camp-style games and programming will also be incorporated every day, including daily outdoor activities. Please send sunscreen, a hat and water bottle labelled with your camper’s name to camp each day.

Campers in all camp programs will have the opportunity to participate in recreational swimming 2–3 times per week. Campers should come prepared with a bathing suit and towel on their swim days (a schedule will be sent to registered families). Please note there is no alternative programming available during swim time.

Lunch and a healthy snack are included each day. Please refer to our Camp menu for details.
