Overview
This immersive DNA Forensics Workshop offers high school students a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of DNA analysis in criminal investigations. Through engaging lessons, real-world case studies, and hands-on lab activities, students will learn the techniques used in professional forensic laboratories. Participants will gain practical experience in DNA collection, extraction, amplification, and profiling while working with industry-standard tools like polymerase chain reaction (PCR), agarose gel electrophoresis, and Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis. This workshop is designed to provide valuable skills and insights for students interested in careers in biotechnology, forensic science, molecular biology, or law enforcement.
By the End of the Workshop, Students Will Be Able To:
- Explain how DNA evidence has transformed criminal investigations and its role in modern forensic science.
- Describe the principles and processes behind DNA fingerprinting.
- Understand the importance of standardized DNA profiling and the role of centralized databases such as CODIS and the RCMP National DNA Data Bank.
- Identify key applications of DNA forensics, including ancestry tracing, paternity testing, and familial relationship analysis.
- Gain proficiency in foundational forensic laboratory techniques, including DNA isolation, collection, PCR amplification, agarose gel electrophoresis, and sequencing.
