Genius Newsletter

This year, Metro Prep proudly opened the GENIUS Biotechnology Lab, where students are getting hands-on experience with real, cutting-edge science. From DNA experiments to advanced genetic techniques, the lab has been buzzing with discovery, curiosity, and learning! Here’s a snapshot of all the exciting discoveries and learning moments that have taken place in the Genius Lab so far!

From Cells to Profiles: Grade11 Students Explore Genetics

In their Genetics and Molecular Biology course, Grade 11 students got a first-hand look at modern genetics. They extracted DNA, investigated how it varies between individuals, and analyzed it using lab tools to see patterns unique to each person. It was an exciting opportunity for them to step into the role of scientists and experience the thrill of discovery firsthand.

Happening Now in the Genius Lab

Hands-On Genetic Engineering: Grade9 Students
Our Grade 9 students are exploring the steps of genetic engineering. From extracting DNA and performing restriction digests to analyzing fragments on a gel, they are learning how scientists manipulate and study genes. This hands-on experience lays the groundwork for more advanced courses in the years ahead.

A Crash Course in Cutting-Edge Science: Grade12 Students
Grade 12 students are taking an intensive, hands-on introduction to advanced biotechnology this term. In their only chance to work in the GENIUS Lab, they will explore mitochondrial DNA sequencing, perform ELISA experiments, and get a first look at CRISPR, the revolutionary gene-editing technology. This crash course gives graduating students a unique experience with cutting-edge techniques and helps build practical skills for post-secondary science studies.

Learning from the Leaders in Genetics

In March, students will meet Dr. Michael D. Wilson, Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Toronto and Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children, who will show how studying animals and other organisms helps us understand human biology. They will also participate in a hands-on workshop led by Dr. Erin Styles, Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, exploring how DNA can be “cracked” to uncover patterns in clinical genetics.

These experiences give students a rare opportunity to learn directly from leading experts, bringing cutting-edge science to life and inspiring curiosity beyond the classroom.

Introducing the Genius Scholar Program!

The Genius Scholars Program gives motivated Grade 11 and 12 students the chance to pursue an independent research project that stretches their curiosity and academic skills. Students can choose their own topic or select from suggested projects, with guidance and support from faculty mentors as they develop their ideas.

Throughout the program, students will build critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills while exploring a topic they are passionate about. This program is ideal for students ready to take initiative, follow their interests, and create work that sets them apart academically.Interested?
